Plugins

What is a WordPress Plugin?

WordPress, out of the box, is very capable, but it doesn’t provide all the functionality you might want. The WordPress philosophy is that many features are provided by plugins. If someone wants a feature, they can choose to add the feature without everyone being forced to have that feature.

WordPress is famous for the slogan “There’s a plugin for that!”. It’s amazingly true.

Plugin Usage

We use many WordPress plugins, for a variety of reasons.

To find out what plugins we use, go to the website Dashboard > Plugins > Installed Plugins.

Here are some of the plugins we use:

  • Akismet – Spam protection
  • Depicter – Popup and slider builder
  • Duplicate Page – Provides easy duplication of post and pages
  • Easy Table of Contents – Provides a table of contents for a page, generated from the page contents
  • Elementor – A website builder (NOTE: I’d like to get rid of this, but first I have to discover everywhere it’s used, so the website isn’t broken as a result of removing it.)
  • FluentSMTP – Provides SMTP support for emails sent from the website.
  • Fonts Plugin – Allows customization for fonts
  • Hashbar – Provides notification bars for the website
  • Members – A User and Role management plugin
  • Ocean Custom Sidebar – Allows the creation of multiple sidebars (specific to the OceanWP theme)
  • Ocean Extra – Adds extra features to the OceanWP theme (specific to the OceanW theme)
  • Private Google Calendars – Provides WordPress access to the SVC calendar (SVC uses a Google calendar)
  • Profile Builder & Profile Builder Pro – A login, registration, and edit profile plugin for website members.
  • RankMath SEO – An SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plugin
  • Really Simple Security – A security plugin
  • Simple History – A useful plugin for keeping track of what’s been done on the website
  • SpeedyCache – A caching plugin, to help with the website’s performance
  • Wordfence Security – A plugin that provides security and logging for the website

(This is not a complete list.)
